Sharks Board: Take 2

The next day after the Sharks Board boat tour, we headed to the main Sharks Boards headquarters in northern Durban. Here they have their main research facilities and a small museum as well as a outdoor auditorium built for one sole thing.. dissecting sharks!

Every shark that is dissected has been caught in the sharks board nets and is used for educational and research purposes. on average one shark is caught each week in the nets and about one dolphin every year sadly.

We only got to see a very small shark get dissected sadly but still an awesome gruesome experience non the less! A sharks skeleton is pure cartilage, thus meaning they can completely fold their bodies in half, also meaning that after death the only thing that does not decompose is the teeth.

Their snout is filled with small pockets of fluid that are used for their sense of smell. A shark can sense one part blood to one million parts water. Thus their taste for blood.

However, Great Whites do not like the taste of humans, so nearly 100% of the time the will bite and let go, as a shark bites you it can instantly taste how much energy it will get out of eating you, humans have little flubber giving them next to no energy, hence you are not worth it.
