The Doge of Venice was head of the Republic of Venice. Though he had no real power over Venice he was said to be a glorified prisoner, with a whole palace just to himself, though he was not allowed to leave. Ever. The palace Established in 1340 went through many rebuilds in its life due to fires, resulting in many different eras of architecture and art history.
The room in the Image above is said to be the largest in Europe. 20m high 25m wide and 53m long it is the Chamber of the Grand Council. Unfortunately many of the incredible rooms in the Doge's apartments are strictly forbidden to take photos. The images above I had to take though as being in that space was far far too incredible not to share.
The Palace was massive, with a full stocked armory and a large prison cell system underneath, its an incredible place to walk around.
