1 year ago in april i was hit by a hit and run taxi van at 7pm on a thursday outside Michael Fowler Centre in Wellington, 10m in to our weekly dametruth ride. resulting in breaking my left radius and  ulnar clean in half. 2 plates around 10cm each with 12 screws where inserted to keep these two bones together. after 6 weeks with my arm out of cast i noticed that the wrist was not set 100% talking to the physio it was not un common for them to not get the placement of the bones perfect. through alot of physio and strength training i managed to get my arm ack to a point where i felt comfortable and it stopped bothering on a day to day basis.

one year later in april 2011 i remember talking to Hagan who had undergone a similar surgery we where comparing scars and plates. i remember thinking a year after my first surgery that this was the first time where i had ridden hard a few days in a row and my arm/wrist was not giving me any problems. Later that weekend during the infamous SBC booze cruise, after a few beers, Doogle and I had what i can only explain as a spectacular crash up around the 35 - 40km/hr range. i stood up straighten our my bars got off the road, walked down to find the group and asses the damage. a few short moments later i looked at my arm and noticed that things just wernt right.

I had broken my radius and bent the plate 30 degrees. braking one bone was the biggest problem in this since a bent bone is shorter than a straight one the radius ripped itself out of the joint, thus resulting in ripping the ligaments in my hand and the wrist joint. after a 3 hours of surgery, expected 1.5, they rebuilt my arm putting in a longer plate. i then went on with my life back in a cast continuing on with uni and getting of this shit storm waiting for the day to get my cast off and get back on my bikes.

Jump forward to the present day (well actually friday) and i flew to Auckland to see the wrist specialist, a private doctor, to get my cast taken off and get the wrist ligaments checked by 'the best in the business'. post taking the cast off we both looked at the absolutely tiny wrist and noticed that is really didnt look right at all. The ulnar sticking out of the wrist joint a good 20mm was just not ment to happen. i got sent straight to get some comparison xrays of my left and right arms. after tis the problem was clear. the radius has been set with an over extend curve pulling the wrist joint down with it and the ulnar staying straight out the top. basically the first surgery was not 100% perfect and the second just made it a whole lot worse.

So the plan is more surgery, next week. This will be a cutting of the radius pulling it back to straight. bone from my pelvis, hip,  will be taken and an even bigger plate will be put in to keep the bone as straight as possible. then after 6 more weeks of recovery we will see how much ligament and cartilage damage has been done by having my wrist dislocated for a total of 6 weeks now. then theres is a possibility in 6 weeks to have more surgery to try and fix the ligament damage.

i have no idea what is going to happen with uni as i can now not finish my final projects or sit my exams. but that is a whole other story.

For now i leave you with this photo taken up at my beach house today. shot with my gf1 with the holga lens. no post editing.

Till next time, Grant. Chur.
